How to Shrink a Screen Recording's File Size

Screen recordings get large because they store a full-resolution frame many times per second, usually with a quality-first codec. Four settings control the size: resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. The four things that control file size

  • Resolution. A 4K recording has four times the pixels of 1080p. Most walkthroughs don't need more than 1080p, and many read fine at 720p.
  • Frame rate. 60fps is for smooth motion. A screen recording of someone clicking through an app is fine at 30fps, sometimes 24. Halving the frame rate roughly halves the size.
  • Codec. H.264 is the compatible default. H.265/HEVC is ~30–50% smaller at the same quality but needs newer software. Older codecs (or "lossless" export presets) balloon the file.
  • Bitrate. This is the direct size dial — bits stored per second of video. Recorders often default high. For screen content, a moderate bitrate looks identical to a high one.

How to re-export a smaller file

On a Mac

Open the recording in QuickTime Player, then File > Export As and pick 1080p (or 720p). QuickTime re-encodes to H.264 at a sensible bitrate. For finer control, use a free tool like HandBrake: load the file, choose the "Fast 1080p30" preset, and adjust the quality slider if needed.

On Windows

The Photos app can trim but not re-encode much. HandBrake works the same as on Mac. Clipchamp (bundled with Windows 11) exports at chosen resolutions and compresses on the way out.

Anywhere

HandBrake is the cross-platform standard: open source, free, and its default presets already do the right thing. Load the file, pick Fast 1080p30, export.

Change settings once, in your recorder, and you won't have to compress afterward. Set it to record at 1080p and 30fps from the start — you rarely miss the extra pixels or frames on UI footage.

A rough sense of the savings

For a two-minute walkthrough, going from a native 4K/60fps capture to a 1080p/30fps H.264 export commonly takes a file from several hundred megabytes down to 10–30 MB. Dropping to 720p or switching to H.265 can roughly halve that again. Exact numbers depend on how much the screen changes, but the direction is consistent.

The approach that skips the problem

Video file size is a consequence of storing 30 frames a second. A multi-step walkthrough doesn't actually need that — most of the frames are identical between clicks.
