The property that matters is length. A long password from a large alphabet is hard to brute force; a short one padded with substitutions is not, because attackers have been modelling those substitutions for twenty years.
Common questions
How long should a password be?
At least 16 characters for anything that matters, and longer where a manager is filling it in for you. Length contributes far more to strength than adding another symbol class to a short password.
Is a random string better than a passphrase?
For anything a password manager types, yes — you never have to read it. For the handful you type yourself, a long multi-word passphrase is easier to remember at comparable strength, provided the words are chosen randomly rather than by you.
Is generating a password in a browser safe?
It relies on the platform's cryptographic generator rather than a predictable one, and nothing leaves the page. The residual risk is your own machine — a compromised device can read anything on screen, whoever generated it.
